Nurses' perceptions of individual and organizational political reasons for horizontal peer bullying.
Tue, 31 Aug 2010 23:00:00 +0100 | Nursing Ethics
This study aims to identify how nurses perceive the relevance of individual and political reasons for bullying behaviors. In February 2009 a survey was conducted with nurses working in a research and training hospital located in Turkey. The results showed that the aim of influencing promotion, task assignments, performance appraisal, recruitment, dismissal, allocation of equipment and operational means, together with allocation of personal benefits and organizational structure decisions, were perceived as potential political reasons for bullying by nurses. Moreover, the reasons for the various bullying behaviors were perceived as relevant to individual characteristics, namely, the perpetrators' need for power, and their psychological and private life problems. Phylogeny of major lineages of galliform birds (Aves: Galliformes) based on complete mitochondrial genomes.
Sat, 28 Aug 2010 06:06:03 +0100 | Genetics and Molecular Research
Authors: Kan XZ, Yang JK, Li XF, Chen L, Lei ZP, Wang M, Qian CJ, Gao H, Yang ZY Complete mitochondrial DNA sequences have been used successfully to estimate phylogenetic relationships among animal taxa, and for studies of population genetics and molecular evolution. We made phylogenetic analyses of 22 species of Galliformes, with two species of Anseriformes as outgroups, using maximum likelihood (ML), maximum parsimony (MP) and Bayesian inference (BI) methods based on the nucleotide dataset and the corresponding amino acid dataset of 13 concatenated protein-coding genes. The consensus phylogenetic trees supported monophyly of Galliformes, Phasianidae (nucleotide and amino acid: posterior probabilities 1.00 in BI, bootstrap value > 99% in ML and MP), Coturnicinae, and Gallininae (nu...

Dose-dependent ultrastructural and morphometric alterations after erythropoietin treatment in rat femoral artery vasospasm model
Sat, 28 Aug 2010 05:56:06 +0100 | Acta Neurochirurgica
Conclusion  In our study, there was no significant difference between the two rhEPO treatment groups, but rhEPO treatment was shown to be histologically and morphometrically effective in vasospasm. However, if dosage of EPO treatment is augmented, successful results may be achieved. Mutual Rescues between Two Dominant Negative Mutations in Cardiac Troponin I and Cardiac Troponin T [Protein Structure and Folding]
Fri, 27 Aug 2010 13:40:48 +0100 | Journal of Biological Chemistry
Troponin T (TnT) and troponin I (TnI) are two evolutionarily and functionally linked subunits of the troponin complex that regulates striated muscle contraction. We previously reported a single amino acid substitution in the highly conserved TnT-binding helix of cardiac TnI (cTnI) in wild turkey hearts in concurrence with an abnormally spliced myopathic cardiac TnT (cTnT) (Biesiadecki, B. J., Schneider, K. L., Yu, Z. B., Chong, S. M., and Jin, J. P. (2004) J. Biol. Chem. 279, 13825–13832). To investigate the functional effect of this cTnI mutation and its potential value in compensating for the cTnT abnormality, we developed transgenic mice expressing the mutant cTnI (K118C) in the heart with or without the deletion of the endogenous cTnI gene to mimic the homozygote and heterozygote...

“Mad honey” and the heart
Fri, 27 Aug 2010 03:27:29 +0100 | The Poison Review
2.5 out of 5 stars Cardiac effects of “mad honey”: a case series. Okuyan E et al.  Clin Toxicol 2010 Jun 24 [Epub ahead of print] Abstract As we have noted before in a post entitled “Mad Honey Sex“, pollen of certain Rhododendron species contain grayanotoxins, agents that bind to sodium channels on cell membranes and maintain them in an open state.  In addition, they stimulate the vagus nerve causing bradycardia.  Presenting signs and symptoms of “mad honey” toxicity include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, syncope, and diaphoresis. This case series, from Turkey, prospectively enrolled 44 consecutive patients admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of “mad honey” intoxication.  Mean systolic blood pressure was 73 mm Hg, mean diastolic pressure ...
